Application:

RX-974 is an additive flame retardant developed for applications such as PP and HIPS to reach to class V-2 according to the UL 94 standard, with outstanding UV and light stability. The chemical structure of the brominated part is responsible for its excellent UV and  light stability leading to a good appearance of the molded part.

The high melting temperature of RX-974 permits production of highly-filled masterbatch concentrates. In addition as RX-974 melt blend-able and melts at the processing temperature of PP,it is easy to process and can improve flow ability.

It solves the previously unanswered problem of blooming in flame retardant grades of PP.

Production process:

  1. In the solvent acetic anhydride, pentaerythritol and urea are added, and then bromine is slowly added dropwise for bromination reaction. The reaction temperature is controlled at 60-80 ℃ to generate tribromonepentyl acetate. After sampling and liquid chromatography detection, the product content reaches over 98%, and the acetic acid and acetic anhydride are evaporated.

  2. Continue to add organic solvents and catalysts, and add dehydrating agents for drying. Control the temperature at 25-40 ℃ to add phosphorus oxychloride, and then add an acid binding agent. Under the action of the acid binding agent, ester exchange is carried out to obtain the Tris (tribromonepentyl)phosphate ester solution.

  3. Add the above material solution to an emulsifier aqueous solution containing 2-5wt%, mix evenly, and form a homogeneous organic solvent for distillation. Filter and wash with water to obtain the product.

  4. Preferably, in step 1, the mass ratio of acetic anhydride to pentaerythritol is 2-5:1, and the molar ratio of bromine to urea and pentaerythritol is 3-3.5:1-1.5:2. Preferably, in step 2, the organic solvent is halogenated alkanes or aromatic hydrocarbons, and the amount of organic solvent used is 1-2 times the mass of pentaerythritol.Furthermore, in step 2, the organic solvent is any one of toluene, trichloromethane, benzene, xylene, or carbon tetrachloride.Preferably, in step 2, the catalyst is a composite catalyst composed of aluminum trichloride, tin tetrachloride, and titanium tetrachloride in a mass ratio of 1:1:1, with a catalyst dosage of 2-5wt% of pentaerythritol. Preferably, in step 2, the acid binding agent is sodium hydroxide, sodium alcohol, or organic amine, with a molar ratio of 3:1 between the acid binding agent and phosphorus oxychloride, and a molar ratio of 1:3 between phosphorus oxychloride and pentaerythritol. Preferably, in step 2, the dehydrating agent is phosphorus pentoxide or molecular sieve. Preferably, in step 3, the emulsifiers are phenol ether phosphate esters and fatty alcohol ether phosphate esters. Preferably, in step 3, the temperature of the distilled organic solvent is 80-100.

  6. Firstly, pentaerythritol, bromine, and urea are used as raw materials to obtain tribromonepentyl acetate. Then, phosphorus oxychloride, catalyst, and acid binding agent are added to the tribromonepentyl acetate to synthesize tribromonepentyl phosphate. There is no need to synthesize tribromonepentyl alcohol separately, and then tribromonepentyl phosphate is synthesized from tribromonepentyl alcohol, which can achieve a "one pot" synthesis of Tris (tribromonepentyl)phosphate. The process is simplified, Improved the production efficiency of Tris (tribromonepentyl)phosphate, which is conducive to the large-scale industrial production of Tris (tribromonepentyl)phosphate.
